My Unforgettable Mobility Experience in Serbia

Spending a semester in Novi Sad, Serbia, was more than just an academic journey—it was a life-changing experience. As a 20-year-old student of Teaching English at the Faculty of Humanities, I had the incredible opportunity to complete my internship in Serbia during the fall semester of 2024/2025. Looking back, I can confidently say that this exchange was a milestone in my personal and professional growth.

Learning and Growing as a Teacher

My internship in Serbia was a transformative experience that deepened my understanding of teaching and classroom management. Before arriving, I had theoretical knowledge, but seeing the practical side of teaching in a different educational setting gave me invaluable insights. I observed how teachers engaged students, maintained discipline, and adapted their methods to different learning styles. These experiences not only strengthened my teaching skills but also boosted my confidence in managing a classroom effectively.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my internship was the mentorship I received from Professor Gordana Vladislavljevic. She was more than just a supervisor—she became a guiding force in my journey. Her expertise, patience, and encouragement helped me navigate the challenges of teaching in a new environment. Beyond academics, she also provided emotional support, making me feel welcomed and valued. I even had the privilege of meeting her family and children, which made my experience in Serbia feel even more personal and meaningful.

Friendships That Last a Lifetime

One of the best parts of my mobility experience was the friendships I built. Living in a dormitory in Novi Sad introduced me to people from different backgrounds, and I formed bonds that I will cherish forever. My roommate, Emina, was from Bosnia, and we quickly became close friends. We shared stories, cultures, and late-night conversations, creating a connection that went beyond just being roommates.

Another special friend I made was Julia, whom I met in the dormitory. We spent a lot of time together exploring the city, trying local food, and supporting each other throughout the semester. I hope to reunite with her in the future and continue our friendship. These relationships reminded me of the beauty of cultural exchange—how people from different countries can come together and form deep connections despite their differences.

Discovering Serbian Culture and Novi Sad

Serbia has a rich culture that I had the pleasure of experiencing firsthand. Novi Sad, with its charming streets, historic architecture, and warm people, felt like a second home to me. The city is known for its lively atmosphere, especially in places like the Petrovaradin Fortress, where I enjoyed breathtaking views of the Danube River.

The local cuisine was another highlight of my stay. I tried traditional Serbian dishes like ćevapi (grilled meat sausages), sarma (stuffed cabbage rolls), and ajvar (a delicious red pepper spread). The hospitality of the Serbian people made every meal feel like a family gathering.

Beyond food, Serbian traditions fascinated me. I had the chance to witness folk music and dance performances, which reflected the deep cultural heritage of the country. The warmth and friendliness of the people made it easy to adapt to life in Serbia and feel included in their community.

A Journey That Shaped My Future

My time in Serbia was more than just an academic requirement—it was a period of personal growth, cultural discovery, and lifelong connections. The experience of teaching, learning, and making friends from different countries has shaped my perspective on education and life. I left Serbia with a heart full of memories and a mind enriched with knowledge.

I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity and for the people who made my experience so meaningful. From my mentor, Professor Gordana, to my wonderful friends Emina and Julia, each person I met played a role in making this journey unforgettable.

I hope to return to Serbia one day—not just as a visitor but as someone who once called it home.
